Six Sigma Black Belt Certification: Where To Begin
The certified Six Sigma Black Belt is the highest level of Six Sigma certified professionals (except for Six Sigma Master Black Belt – but this is essentially a Six Sigma coach).
Six Sigma Black Belt is a professional capable of explaining Six Sigma principles and methodology, including supporting systems and tools. Six Sigma Black Belt leads a Six Sigma project team and is able to perform any Six Sigma role every step of the way, step in whenever necessary, and guide all members of his Six Sigma team.
A Black Belt should demonstrate team leadership, understand team dynamics, and assign team member roles and responsibilities. Black Belts have a thorough understanding of all aspects of the DMAIC model in accordance with Six Sigma principles. They have basic knowledge of lean enterprise concepts, are able to identify nonvalue-added elements and activities, and are able to use specific tools. Six Sigma Black Belt is confident using the wide set of Six Sigma tools, and can make decisions leading to the best results of a Six Sigma project.
Six Sigma Black Belt Certification Process and Requirements
Six Sigma Black Belt candidates are required to pass a written examination that consists of multiple choice questions measuring the comprehension of the Body of Knowledge. The Six Sigma Black Belt certification examination is a 4 hour exam with 150 multiple-choice questions. There is no centralized body for Six Sigma certifications, therefore, they can be taken in various organizations. Most Six Sigma Black Belts get certified on the job, within their organization.
Candidates should keep in mind that Six Sigma Black Belt requires two completed projects with signed affidavits, or one completed project with a signed affidavit and three years of work experience, in one or more areas of the Six Sigma Body of Knowledge. Check with your official Six Sigma representative regarding the requirements for affidavits, project submissions and other relevant documentation you need to provide to become a certified Six Sigma Black Belt.
